Rhodes Estate Regeneration of Public Spaces In association with the Queensbridge Trust.

Work carried out for the residents of Rhodes Estate Hackney during 2004-5, make up a large-scale grass routes regeneration, and community cohesion project. The separate stages are broken into 4 distinct projects.

Stage 1. PLAY PEN
The Third Person were asked to instigate a video project with the children on the estate to talk about and demonstrate the need for a new football pitch. The video and experience was used to galvanise interest and raise self-expression amongst the estates youth. Queensbridge Trust used the video to approach other groups, the council and community members. Following the success of the first intervention a community open-day was organised, which would throw the process open to the wider adult community.

Stage 2. OPEN DAY
The Third Person videoed and conducted conversations with people during the open-day and worked with if-untitled architects and Hackney Play Association to produce a documentary video of the process. Play Pen was also shown throughout the day.

The Open Day video illustrates the nature of the estate and includes interviews with inhabitants both young and old as well as members of the varied teams involved. Queensbridge Trust has used it successfully in applications and for accessing higher profile organisations and funds.

Being part of the steering group and involved since its conception the Third Person performed an instrumental part in the development of the community cohesion project driving and raising awareness in the process.

Stage 3. Hackney Play Association Video.
With Hackney Play Association the Third Person produced a document of the work HPA carried out with the kids on the estate. Getting the children to consider and design new play areas and resources.

Stage 4. To Whom It May Concern Program
This larger consultation project named by If-Untitled Architects saw The Third Person organise a round of video conversations and outside projections to celebrate and develop community participation in the consultation program. Over a week If-Untitled and The Third Person worked in-situ throughout the estate, gathering opinions and propositions from two thirds of the population. Each night projections of previous videos and conversations recorded during the days were projected onto the side of the buildings, raising the profile of the event and generating a forum for people to coma together and share their thoughts and opinions.

A final report has been compiled by Queensbrideg Trust, The Third Person, and If-Unititled.
